BMW Reveals Plans for New Retro-Style Motorcycle

BMW Motorrad, the motorcycle division of German luxury-vehicle maker BMW AG, released a sketch of a new bike it plans to begin building next year.
The company said the coming model will have a horizontally opposed two-cylinder “boxer” engine and other features that reflect BMW’s signature motorcycle designs dating to the R 32 of 1923. BMW’s motorcycle boss Stephan Schaller made the announcement during the EICMA international motorcycle show in Milan.
For decades the air-cooled boxer was the standard power plant for BMW bikes, though the quest for more horsepower in the last decade drove the company to more conventional four-cylinder layouts similar to those on high-performance Japanese bikes.
The stylized image of the new bike reminds me of R60 and R75 models from the 1960s and 1970s – a favorite period for many BMW purists. Many riders have wondered when BMW would jump on the retro-bike bandwagon that has benefited rivals including Ducati, Triumph and harley-Davidson.
The company said it will reveal more about the bike, including its model designation and launch date later.
